The concept of “shepherding” is used throughout the Bible to describe leaders and caregivers. Sheep weren’t known for their pleasant smell. According to Pope Francis, shepherds should live with the smell of their sheep. The gospel of today portrays Jesus as the “good shepherd” who has a deep relationship with his sheep (followers). Unlike a hired hand who abandons the flock at danger, the good shepherd lays down his life for them.
This closeness suggests a level of intimacy where the shepherd would be familiar with the sheep’s scent, which can metaphorically represent their struggles, needs, and even their imperfections and willingness to be present with the flock in their reality. A good shepherd doesn’t stay distant but walks among the sheep, sharing their joys and sorrows. This points to the example of Jesus, the divine, humbling himself to serve humanity.
