PROUD OF THE SCARS: REFLECTION FOR THE 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER (YEAR) Luke 24: 35-48

This Sunday’s gospel reminds me of the sacrifices our mothers make. Their bodies bear the scars which they are not ashamed to show, a testament to the strength and love that carries them through the journey of motherhood. Happy Mothers’ Day to all Mothers.

Jesus appears to his disciples after the resurrection, bearing the wounds inflicted upon him during the crucifixion. He was not ashamed to show them. These scars, far from being a sign of defeat, are a testament to his triumph over death. They are a constant reminder of the physical ordeal He endured. His victory wasn’t effortless; it came at a great cost.

Jesus carefully explains how his suffering and scars fulfill the prophecies written in the Scriptures to His disciples. The scars become a symbol of the divine plan unfolding.

The risen Jesus offers peace and dispels the disciples’ doubts by these marks. The scars, though a reminder of hardship, become a source of hope, signifying that suffering can lead to redemption.

In our own lives, we too experience trials and tribulations that leave their mark. They can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. They can be past hurt, burden borne. The message is that our scars are not badges of defeat, but rather evidence of battles fought, and victories won.

Scars are often seen as something to hide, a mark of pain and weakness.
Often, these are a source of shame, a reminder of pain we’d rather forget. But what if, like Jesus, we viewed our scars with pride? Just as Jesus’ scars pointed to a greater purpose, our scars can tell a story of overcoming challenges and emerging stronger. They can serve as a source of inspiration for ourselves and others. Our own scars, physical or emotional, can transform from symbols of shame into badges of courage.
